Dadel balletjies were one of my favorite treats growing up. We always made them for Christmas and other special occasions, and I loved every bite. My grandma, who lived in Keimoes, Northern Cape, used to make these incredible date balls with dates, crunchy Marie biscuits, and shredded coconut. The memories of her kitchen filled with the aroma of these little delights will always stay with me. Here’s how you can make them too!
Ingredients
- 230g butter
- 200g sugar
- 500g pitted dates, chopped finely
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 200g Marie biscuits, crushed into crumbs
- Sweetened shredded coconut (for rolling)
Instructions
- Melt the butter and sugar: Place a pot on the stove over medium heat. Add the butter and sugar and stir until melted and combined.
- Add the chopped dates: Stir in the finely chopped pitted dates. Let the mixture cook gently, stirring continuously, until the dates soften and everything becomes a sticky, well-blended mixture.
- Incorporate the biscuits: Remove the pot from the heat. Add the crushed Marie biscuits to the date mixture and mix well. Ensure the biscuit crumbs are evenly distributed.
- Add the vanilla essence: Stir in the vanilla essence for that extra touch of flavor.
- Roll the date balls: Allow the mixture to cool slightly—it will still be warm but safe to handle. Take small amounts and roll them into bite-sized balls in your hands.
- Coat with coconut: Roll each date ball in sweetened shredded coconut until fully coated.
- Let them set: Place the date balls on a tray or plate to cool completely at room temperature. Avoid refrigerating them as they can become too hard.
Tips for Perfect Dadel Balletjies
- Chop the dates finely to ensure they blend well into the mixture, but feel free to leave them slightly chunky if you prefer more texture.
- Don’t crush the Marie biscuits into fine powder; small crumbs add a delightful crunch.
- Store the date balls in an airtight container at room temperature for the best texture and flavor.
Enjoy!
Dadel balletjies are chewy, sweet, and utterly delicious. Whether you’re making them for a special occasion or just for a nostalgic treat, these date balls will quickly become a favorite. Just try to eat only one—I dare you!
